GILLIAN Molloy was always a big fan of the television show Gilligans Island, so it makes perfect sense that her new restaurant, which happens to be on an island, is named after the classic comedy series.

Gilligan’s Cafe & Bar on Bright Ave in Arcadia is the latest addition to Magnetic Island’s food scene after Gillian and husband Peter opened it on April 11 2014.

The couple spent three months renovating the venue in the hope of opening it for the critical Easter holiday – a deadline they managed to meet.

They were married on the island years ago and have long dreamt of opening a business there.

Mr Molloy renovated the courtyard area behind the cafe, which has Gilligan’s popular Ship Wrecked Bar where you can sit and enjoy a cold beverage.

“We love Magnetic Island,” Mrs Molloy said.

“We both came separately as kids.

“We saw so much potential here in Arcadia and we loved this courtyard.”

Mr Molloy said they planned to tap into the market of local diners, as well as tourists.

He said there were not a lot of affordable dining options for residents on the island, as most eateries were aimed at tourists.

Gilligan’s will offer a “modern Australian” menu featuring local seafood, great salads and burgers with lots of vegetarian options.

The cafe has bamboo furniture to keep with the island theme and loads of Gilligan’s Island memorabilia.

The interior has received a complete makeover and a special Gilligan’s Island coffee machine has been brought in.
